Children learn best through play and by interacting with others. At DHCDC, children are encouraged to experiment and explore as they develop and learn. DHCDC's program follows a developmental approach to emergent learning and curriculum planning that:

  • Recognizes and supports the uniqueness of each child.
  • Encourages each child to progress at his/her own rate.
  • Fosters curiosity and the use of imagination.
  • Builds a secure sense of self worth.
  • Provides a stimulating environment that meets the needs of individual interests, differences and capabilities.

TOP 6 REASONS                             PARENTS CHOOSE DHCDC

DHCDC ranks as the highest-rated program in Hampton (Virginia Quality) and among the top 7% of preschools in the nations (NAEYC accreditation). Studies show that children attending high-quality preschools have higher achievement rates, higher graduation rates, and lower grade retention.

Our teachers are all highly trained and educated, many holding degrees in early childhood education or related fields.  They participate in ongoing professional development.

We know it - child care is expensive! That's why, thanks to grants and generous donors, we're able to subsidize tuition, allowing you to pay based on your family income and need.

You won't find many (if any!) child care centers with staff that includes a Family Resource and Curriculum Coordinator. We go the extra distance for your child.

Unlike most centers we operate in a real school building. We have large, sunny classrooms, a huge playground with trike paths and a nature trail, and even a gymnasium (ideal for physical play during extreme temperatures and precipitation).

As a long-standing nonprofit with a place in the heart of many prominent Peninsula leaders, DHCDC is frequently chosen for programs like The Mayor's Book Club, free speech therapy with graduate students, special visitors and live shows, to the delight and education of our children.

"It was difficult finding affordable and professional child care in Hampton. We were first time parents and both needed to work in order to make ends meet. We were overwhelmed by stress and expenses. But walking into DHCDC felt like our prayers were answered." - Oakley's Mom

Breakfast, a hot lunch, and an afternoon snack based on U.S.D.A. Child Care Food Program nutrition requirements will be served to each child each day. These meals provide the opportunity for learning experiences, which form correct habits of eating in a pleasant atmosphere.

Tuition & Fees

Fees for children ages 2 through 5 years are based on a sliding scale and are calculated based on family income and need. Infant and Toddler rates are fixed and highly competitive. Tuition payments are due each Friday for the upcoming week.
